Tabaski

Following the celebration of Jesus Christ’s miraculous birth, Muslims around the world celebrated “Tabaski.” Tabaski comes a couple months after the month of Ramadan – the month Muslims fast. During Tabaski, each Muslim family sacrifices a ram or goat.

One of our Fulani friends in town invited us to celebrate this holiday with them. We went and observed the killing of two animals. After they had slit the animals’ throats, I stood looking at the small pool of blood. The blood I was looking at had no power, for it was simply the blood of a dead ram and a dead goat. Throughout the day of Tabaski, I was reminded to pray for Muslims around the world. The hope they claim to have is false & misplaced. If they only knew that the ultimate sacrifice has already been made. Jesus Christ died for the sins of the world – for everyone. It is his blood that can forgive sins and only his blood.

“For it is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.” Hebrews 10: 4

“Once for all time he took blood into that Most Holy Place, but not the blood of goats and calves. He took his own blood, and with it secured our salvation forever…for by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.” Hebrews 9: 12,14b

God, the ruler of the world, sent his Son into this world to die for all of our wicked sins. I am thankful for the forgiveness of my sins, for I am definitely a sinner. Praise God, I don’t have to offer sacrifices to him for my sins. I’d have to offer a lot! Yet, all he wants us to do is “give your bodies to God. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice – the kind he will accept.” (Romans 12:1)

As Tabaski came to a close, I was heavy hearted…thinking about the lostness of this world, misplaced faith of so many, and reminded that I must continually live my life for God. Though the day was dark, there was still much joy in my heart…for Christ did indeed die for me.
